Four Priests of LA Chosen by Pope to Serve as Auxiliary Bishops

Pope Francis has chosen four Los Angeles priests to become auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The appointments of Msgr. Albert Bahhuth, Father Matthew Elshoff, Father Brian Nunes, and Father Slawomir Szkredka were announced by Cardinal-designate Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, in Washington, D.C. at 3 a.m.

In a statement, Archbishop José H. Gomez expressed his joy for the new bishops, saying, “We give thanks to God, and we thank the Holy Father for this great blessing of new bishops. Each is a man of prayer who loves Jesus and has a deep desire to share God’s love and serve God’s people.” He also requested prayers for the newly appointed bishops and entrusted them to the care of Holy Mary, our Blessed Mother.

Archbishop Gomez introduced the auxiliary bishops at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels downtown. He highlighted the diverse nature of the Catholic community in Los Angeles and emphasized that the new bishops reflect this diversity. He described them as men of prayer, with hearts for the poor and a deep desire to spread God’s love and serve God’s people.

The ordination of the new auxiliary bishops is scheduled to take place on September 26 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, where they will join current Auxiliary Bishops Alex Aclan and Marc Trudeau.
