Formerly Known as the ‘World’s Most Wanted Hacker’

Kevin Mitnick, the infamous computer hacker, unfortunately passed away at the age of 59. He had been battling pancreatic cancer for over a year. Mitnick’s life could easily be mistaken for a work of fiction, as stated in his obituary. He was an only child with a mischievous nature and a rebellious attitude towards authority. His early interests in magic tricks and pranks eventually led him to explore phone phreaking, social engineering, and computer hacking.

In 1988, Mitnick was found guilty of copying software from a company and was sentenced to a year in prison. However, even during his supervised release, he managed to break into Pacific Bell’s voicemail computers and continued his hacking activities. He infiltrated cell networks, company systems, and even government websites, earning him the title of the world’s most wanted hacker at the time.

While Mitnick was involved in stealing a significant amount of data and credit card numbers, he claimed to have never profited from his victims. In his own words, “Anyone who loves to play chess knows that it’s enough to defeat your opponent. You don’t have to loot his kingdom or seize his assets to make it worthwhile.” He eventually pled guilty to computer and wire fraud, receiving support from those who saw him as a data liberator.

After a two-year manhunt, Mitnick was arrested in 1995 and became a fugitive on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. He eventually served his time in prison, but emerged as a changed individual in 2000. Mitnick began a new career as a White Hat hacker and security consultant. He co-owned KnowBe4, a security awareness training company, where he utilized his skills for the greater good by educating businesses and individuals on protecting themselves from cyber threats.

Mitnick also wrote several books, including his bestselling memoir, “The Ghost in the Wires: My Adventures as the World’s Most Wanted Hacker.” In this book, he denied hacking government computers. He leaves behind his wife Kimberley, who is currently pregnant with their first child.

In conclusion, Kevin Mitnick’s life was a mix of extraordinary computer hacking escapades and a transformation into an advocate for cyber security. His legacy lives on through his work and the knowledge he shared with the world.
