Former USC Campus Gynecologist Enters a Plea of Not Guilty for Sex-Related Charges – Orange County Register

Former USC campus gynecologist, George Tyndall, has pleaded not guilty to sex-related charges involving 16 patients. The charges include felony counts of sexual penetration of an unconscious person and sexual battery by fraud. The alleged crimes occurred between 2009 and 2016 when the women sought medical treatment at USC’s student health center. The criminal complaint also alleges that Tyndall served “no professional purpose” in his actions. However, eight charges involving five other women were dismissed due to the women’s decisions not to proceed with legal action.

Tyndall’s defense attorneys are seeking a reduction in his $1.3 million bail and his release from electronic monitoring, arguing that he is not a threat to anyone and is not practicing medicine. They maintain his innocence and claim that he has been unfairly confined to his home throughout the proceedings. One of the alleged victims expressed her desire for a swift legal process, stating that justice has been delayed for the past five years.

During the hearing, the prosecutor argued that Tyndall abused his position of trust at the prestigious university, preying on young patients who believed his actions were appropriate. The defense countered by suggesting that the allegations against Tyndall emerged after a Los Angeles Times article, which caused a shift in perception regarding his examinations. They argued that the investigations into the alleged crimes were inadequate and maintained that Tyndall performed legitimate medical procedures.

The testimonies of the alleged victims detailed their experiences of discomfort, feeling violated, and questioning the appropriateness of Tyndall’s actions. They came forward after reading the newspaper article, feeling compelled to speak out. Some of the women testified that they had received substantial settlements, while others expressed their expectations of receiving settlements in the future.

In response to the widespread allegations, USC reached an $852 million settlement in March 2021. This settlement is the largest ever against a university and followed a $215 million class-action settlement in 2020. USC has denied allegations of a cover-up and implemented new protocols to address complaints and ensure appropriate investigations. They have also hired more female physicians and introduced patient education materials.

In a statement, USC President Carol Folt expressed her remorse for the pain experienced by the victims and acknowledged the courage of those who came forward. The settlement aims to provide some resolution for the affected members of the USC community.
