Former GOP Representative Will Hurd boldly declared that he would not compromise his integrity by supporting former President Donald Trump, even if it means sacrificing his chances of participating in the upcoming primary debate as a GOP presidential candidate.
Speaking to CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” on Sunday, Hurd stated, “I refuse to endorse Donald Trump. I understand the consequences this may have on my debate access, but I cannot be dishonest.”
Hurd emphasized his refusal to compromise by saying, “It would be tempting to make false promises, but I simply cannot do that.”
From 2015 to 2021, Hurd represented Texas’ 23rd congressional district, which includes Uvalde, the site of a recent elementary school shooting. As the only Black Republican in the House at the time, Hurd has been a vocal critic of Trump since 2016. Some have even labeled him a “failed politician” and questioned his age as a factor in his potential presidential run.
Hurd formally announced his bid for the 2024 presidency in June, setting himself apart from Trump. However, in order to participate in the GOP’s first primary debate next month, candidates must pledge their support to the eventual Republican nominee, among other requirements.
Former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and other Republican hopefuls, including Donald Trump, are all vying for the top spot in the 2024 presidential election.
When asked about his stance, Hurd affirmed, “I have taken an oath to protect the Constitution. I have pledged my allegiance to the flag of the United States.” He also noted that he recently made a vow on his wedding day last year.
