Former Republican Candidate Charged by Federal Authorities for Shooting at Homes of Democratic Members.

The Justice Department has recently unsealed an indictment against Solomon Peña, a former New Mexico Republican candidate, and his two alleged co-conspirators, Demetrio Trujillo and Jose Trujillo. The trio is facing federal charges for their alleged involvement in a series of drive-by shootings at the homes of Democratic officials in New Mexico. According to prosecutors, Peña carried out these attacks in response to his November 2020 election defeat. Before the shootings, he visited the homes of three Bernalillo County commissioners, urging them not to certify the state House election results, which he claimed were “rigged” against him. Peña and his hired help then allegedly shot up the homes of two Bernalillo County commissioners and two New Mexico state legislators between December 4, 2020, and January 3, 2021. Fortunately, no one was injured in any of the attacks, although children and relatives of Peña’s intended targets were inside during at least three of them. Peña, who pleaded not guilty in February to the initial 14 charges, now faces 11 new counts, including conspiracy, interference with federally protected activities, and firearms offenses, including the use of a machine gun. His alleged accomplices, Demetrio Trujillo and Jose Trujillo, were charged with similar offenses, plus possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. If convicted of the federal charges, Peña faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 60 years in prison, a punishment that illustrates how politically motivated violence has no place in a democracy.
