Former Panthers QB Matt Corral claimed by Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots continue to make surprise quarterback moves, claiming Matt Corral off waivers from the Carolina Panthers as their backup behind starter Mac Jones.

The Patriots had an available roster spot after placing wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on injured reserve.

Corral thought he had secured a spot on the Panthers’ 53-man roster, but he was released on Wednesday. Now, he joins the Patriots as their second option.

The Patriots initially helped the Panthers draft Corral by trading their third-round pick in 2022. In return, they received a fourth-round pick which they used to select quarterback Bailey Zappe.

However, the Patriots waived Zappe on Tuesday and re-signed him along with undrafted quarterback Malik Cunningham to the practice squad on Wednesday.

Now, the Patriots have four quarterbacks in total, two on the active roster and two on the practice squad.

Corral, who stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 205 pounds, spent his rookie season on injured reserve due to a Lisfranc ligament tear. The Panthers’ general manager, Scott Fitterer, indicated that they would consider bringing Corral back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

The Patriots briefly had Jones as their only quarterback this week before bringing in Corral as a potential upgrade in the backup role.

Additionally, Jalen Reagor, a former receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, will be signing with the Patriots’ practice squad after clearing waivers. This is noteworthy as the Patriots face the Philadelphia Eagles, Reagor’s former team, in Week 1.
