Former NYC Building Owned by Mark Rothko Goes on Sale for $3.65M.

The historic townhouse at 313 E. Sixth St, originally built as a single-family home and later transformed into a three-unit building, is now up for sale after 53 long years, priced at $3.65 million. This iconic residence boasts of a remarkable past, having housed some of the most celebrated personalities of their time. Most notably, it was once home to late abstract painter Mark Rothko, who produced some of his most famous artworks from this very building.

Rothko’s art is well-known for being sold for millions of dollars, and in 2014, his painting “No. 6 (Violet, Green, and Red)” fetched a whopping amount of $186 million, ranking it among the five most expensive paintings in history, as per World Art News. Rothko lived in this townhouse with his wife Edith Sachar, and it was the inspiration behind one of his most recognized paintings, “Thru the Window.” His signature and the house’s address translate to a testament of his artistic journey, inscribed on the back of the artwork.

After Rothko’s time, acclaimed director and producer of documentaries, Emile de Antonio, and his wife acquired the property in 1970. The most recent artist to occupy the townhouse was noted abstract expressionist and new realist painter, Alfred Leslie, who used the garden level as his Manhattan studio.

Although the house suffered a fire incident back in 2022, the original staircase remains intact, and the property is structurally sound. This unique and spacious multi-family townhouse spread over 5,480 square feet with six bedrooms and six bathrooms, including a rear yard, a property that boasts a captivating past yet has great potential, presents an excellent opportunity for potential buyers. The property is listed with Glenn Schillere of The Corcoran Group.
