Aug. 15 (UPI) — Former NFL running back Alex Collins tragically passed away following a motorcycle crash in Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., according to an announcement by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He was only 28 years old.

The incident occurred on Sunday night and is currently being investigated by the traffic homicide unit detectives.

“The NFL family mourns the loss of Alex Collins and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, teammates, and loved ones,” the NFL stated in a press release.

Based on the investigation, authorities determined that the crash took place around 10:20 p.m. EDT on Sunday. Collins was riding eastbound on his 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600K while an adult female was driving westbound in a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban SUV.

The collision occurred when the Suburban attempted to make a left turn, and the motorcycle struck the passenger side of the vehicle. The impact caused the motorcycle to enter the rear passenger side window of the Suburban and come to a stop inside the car, as stated in the news release.

As a result of the crash, the Suburban rotated clockwise. Collins was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the Suburban remained at the location and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Collins, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., attended South Plantation High School in Plantation, Fla., and went on to excel at the University of Arkansas. He was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Although Collins was released by the Seahawks in 2017, he later joined the Baltimore Ravens and played for them in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, Collins suffered a broken leg and did not participate in any games that season. He returned to the Seahawks in 2020 and spent his final season with the team in 2021.

“Alex’s infectious smile and his signature river dance moves will be greatly missed,” stated Seahawks general manager John Schneider. “Alex had a way of brightening up a room and was beloved by everyone in our organization. He lived life to the fullest and approached the game of football with unmatched determination.”

In 2017, Collins achieved a career-high of 1,160 yards from scrimmage while playing for the Ravens. He also scored a career-high of eight touchdowns in 2018. Over the course of his five-year career, Collins accumulated 2,464 yards from scrimmage and scored 19 touchdowns in 50 appearances.

Earlier this year, Collins played for the USFL’s Memphis Showboats.

“Alex was a joy to be around and his light shined brightly,” expressed Ravens coach John Harbaugh. “I will always remember him as a great teammate who had a positive impact on everyone he encountered. He was not only a gifted athlete but also a smart player who approached the game with relentless determination. Our heartfelt condolences and support go out to Alex’s family. May he rest in God’s eternal peace.”
