Former head of the Independent Office for Police Conduct, Michael Lockwood, has been charged with multiple counts of sexual assault against an underage girl. The Crown Prosecution Service has accused Lockwood of three counts of rape and six counts of indecent assault, all of which allegedly occurred between 1985 and 1986. Lockwood resigned from his position in December last year following the emergence of sexual misconduct allegations.
Rosemary Ainslie, the head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s special crime division, announced the charges after careful consideration of the evidence provided by Humberside Police. Ainslie reminded everyone involved that the criminal proceedings against Lockwood were ongoing and stressed his right to a fair trial.
In response to the charges, Lockwood’s legal representatives from the PCB Byrne law firm vehemently denied any wrongdoing. Emma Brooks stated that Lockwood strongly refutes all allegations, emphasizing their occurrence nearly four decades ago. Lockwood intends to vigorously defend his position and will continue to cooperate with the proceedings.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct acknowledged the charges against Lockwood and clarified that although he held the position of IOPC director general from 2018 to 2022, he was not an employee but rather a crown appointee. As the criminal proceedings are active, the Independent Office refrained from providing any further comments.
Lockwood is scheduled to appear in court on June 28 to address the charges.
