According to Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google and co-founder of Schmidt Futures, misinformation surrounding the 2024 election will be widespread due to the increased accessibility of advanced artificial intelligence tools.

In an interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Schmidt expressed concern about social media platforms’ failure to protect users from false information generated by AI. Despite ongoing efforts, he emphasized that the issue has not been solved, and in fact, trust and safety groups are shrinking rather than expanding.

While there is a general apprehension about the long-term implications of AI technology, including its potential to mimic human abilities, Schmidt believes that the immediate danger lies in misinformation.

Recently, Google made the decision to stop removing false claims about widespread election fraud in the 2020 US election from YouTube. The company justified this decision by aiming to strike a balance between community protection and enabling open discussions.

When asked about this policy change, Schmidt suggested that social media platforms should focus on allowing “free speech for humans, not computers.” He proposed a solution that involves marking all content, identifying users, and holding individuals accountable if they violate the law. While it may not resolve disagreements about facts, it establishes a foundation by attributing these claims to human beings.
