The seventeenth update of Apple’s iOS operating system was released last month, and while many users eagerly downloaded it, a former Apple employee believes that owners of older iPhones should think twice. According to this ex-employee, who claims to have worked as an Apple sales specialist in Los Angeles, the new iOS update is unnecessary for older generation iPhones. Despite the introduction of exciting features like NameDrop and StandBy mode, he argues that iPhone models below iPhone 13 won’t reap the full benefits of the update. In response to a comment asking if the update will slow down the phone, he simply replied, “Yes, it will.”

A former Apple employee and content creator, Tyler Morgan, shared this information with his 627,600 TikTok followers. He emphasized that older iPhones will experience slower performance with iOS 17 or any new iOS update. iOS 17 is specifically designed for the iPhone 15 and is most compatible with that model. While the update will work fine on iPhone 14, it becomes noticeable on iPhone 13 and earlier models. He firmly states that the update is not necessary, as Apple has a history of slowing down older iPhone models with new updates.

Although the ex-employee clarifies that older phones can still run the update, he warns that users will not fully enjoy the advertised features and will encounter lag and other performance issues. One major problem he highlights is increased battery drain. He advises his followers to stick with their current update if they are satisfied with it. Security updates can still be obtained without updating iOS to a certain extent.

The TikTok video has gained significant attention, accumulating an impressive 3.9 million views and nearly 350,000 likes. Numerous alarmed iPhone users flooded the comments section, many of whom had already downloaded the update on their older iPhones. However, some users with older models reported that they have not noticed any significant differences, and some even claim that their iPhones run better with the update.

Apple has not yet commented on this matter. This video coincides with reports from iPhone 15 users stating that their handsets were overheating. In response, Apple released the iOS 17.0.3 update, which addresses the issue of iPhones running warmer than expected.
