Ford Recalls 169K SUVs and Cars, Rear Cameras to Be Replaced

Ford Motor announced on Friday that it will be recalling 169,000 US vehicles in order to replace rearview cameras and update software. The automaker is taking a $270 million charge to address this callback, which is the latest in a series of rear camera-related recalls by the company in recent years. This recall comes after Ford issued a recall in May for 422,000 vehicles due to potential failures in the rearview camera display, following an earlier recall in January for 462,000 vehicles worldwide. It’s worth noting that many vehicles have been subject to multiple recalls for the same issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has highlighted that the loss of the rearview camera image can significantly reduce a driver’s rear visibility, posing an increased risk of crashes. To rectify this, Ford will be replacing the rearview cameras and updating the software in select models, including 2020-2023 Explorers and Aviators, 2020-2022 Corsairs, 2022-2023 Transit vans, 2018-2021 Navigators, and 2021 Broncos.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ford estimated that the cost of replacing the cameras and updating the software would amount to approximately $270 million. Additionally, the company has reported 3,486 warranty claims relating to rear camera failures, as well as two minor crashes, but fortunately no injuries have been reported. It is also worth noting that since 2021, the NHTSA has been investigating whether Ford delayed a previous recall of 620,000 vehicles in 2020 for a rear camera issue and if the number of vehicles recalled was sufficient.

Overall, Ford is taking proactive measures to address these rear camera-related concerns and prioritize the safety and satisfaction of its customers.
