The incident took place on Wednesday in Ponce Inlet, a town with a population of approximately 3,000. According to the Volusia County Marine Mammal Stranding Team, manatees and bottlenose dolphins are frequently found stranded in Volusia County.
A collaborative effort involving members from the Florida Fish and Wildlife agency, Volusia County Beaches, the Volusia County Marine Mammal Stranding Team, and two sheriff’s deputies was responsible for safely moving the manatee off the beach, as stated by the sheriff’s department.
The rescued manatee was subsequently transported to the Sea World Rehabilitation Center, according to the sheriff’s department.
In light of this incident, the sheriff’s department emphasized that beach visitors should refrain from approaching or touching stranded animals. Instead, they should report such incidents to the Florida Fish and Wildlife alert hotline at 888-404-3922.
Collaborating closely, the Volusia County Marine Mammal Stranding team and Florida Fish and Wildlife are conducting extensive research on the rising rates of manatee mortality along the southern coast of Florida, as indicated on the team’s website.
“Marine mammal strandings are a common occurrence along the Florida coast, involving live animals beaching themselves or deceased animals washing up on shore,” states the team on their website. “Many of the factors leading to live animal beachings remain unknown.”
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, a total of 345 manatees have already succumbed to death in Florida this year. The number of manatee deaths has significantly increased from 353 in 2020 to 832 in 2021.
In 2022, the commission recorded 614 manatee deaths in Florida.
