Flying First Class: Discover a Surprising Downside as It Makes Economy Even Worse

  • I’ve always flown economy, until my first-ever business-class trip this summer.
  • I had the luxury of flying JetBlue’s Mint business class from New York to Paris.
  • Now, I’m worried I’ll never want to fly economy again.

I have always been a thrifty traveler. Whether it’s flying with a low-cost airline or choosing a seat at the back of the plane, I’ve always tried to save money on my travels.

However, this all changed during my first business-class trip this summer. I had the incredible opportunity to fly JetBlue’s luxurious Mint business class from New York to Paris.

The level of luxury and comfort was unlike anything I had experienced before. I was indulged with a multi-course dinner featuring fresh and delicious appetizers, entrées, and desserts. And the seats reclined completely flat, providing the ultimate relaxation during the flight.

Since then, I can’t help but wonder: How will I ever go back to flying economy?

There was plenty of room to stretch out in the Mint suite.

Although my business-class experience was for work and not something I can afford in my personal life, I had to return to flying economy. On my way back home from Paris, I flew JetBlue’s economy class, and I have done so on every flight since.

Every time, just like before my first-class experience, I find myself walking towards the back of the plane, wishing I could be one of those first-class travelers enjoying champagne and lie-flat seats.

The problem is, my experience was too wonderful and it may have changed my perception of budget travel forever. I arrived in Paris feeling well-rested after a peaceful and horizontal overnight flight. I was spoiled with delicious food and luxurious amenities. I have glimpsed the life of luxury, and let me tell you, it’s amazing.

Now, I worry that every flight in economy will feel worse than before. Sitting near the airplane toilets might not have been ideal, but it was what I was accustomed to. Now that I have experienced how relaxing, comfortable, and fabulous flying can be, I can’t help but think about it every time I settle into my rigid economy seat.

Perhaps the solution is to remind myself that traveling and flying are privileges that should be appreciated, even if I’m in the last row of the plane.
