“To be clear, this shooting was driven by racism and the perpetrator harbored a deep hatred for black individuals,” stated Jacksonville Sheriff TK Waters. “This is a somber day for Jacksonville. While any loss of life is tragic, the hate that fueled this killing spree adds an additional layer of heartbreak.”
Prior to the shooting, the assailant was observed donning a vest and mask at Edward Waters University, a historically black college.
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan expressed the community’s distress, saying, “This is a community that has endured countless tragedies.
