Florida Sells Winning Ticket for $1.58 Billion Jackpot in Mega Millions Drawing on August 8, 2023

NEW YORK (WABC) — A fortunate individual from Florida has emerged as the winner of the Mega Millions jackpot. They held the winning ticket that matched all six numbers in Tuesday night’s drawing, ending a long period of lottery disappointments that spanned nearly four months.

The winning ticket was sold at a Publix grocery store in Neptune Beach, according to the Florida Lottery.

The winning numbers for Tuesday’s draw were: 32, 19, 13, 33, 20, with a Mega Ball of 14.

With a prize of $1.58 billion, this Mega Millions jackpot is the largest in the history of the game.

Prior to this win, there had been 31 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner, leading to the accumulation of the third-largest prize in US history.

The winner has the option to receive the $1.58 billion prize as an annuity paid out over 30 years or as a lump sum of approximately $783.3 million.

It’s important to note that the prize is subject to federal taxes and may also be taxed by individual states.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.6 million, making it a difficult feat to achieve. However, smaller prizes with better odds start at $2.

Additionally, the August 8 drawing yielded a significant number of winners, with a total of 7,056,452 winning tickets at other prize levels. Seven tickets matched the five white balls to win the game’s second-tier prize. Two of these tickets, sold in Florida and North Carolina, are worth $2 million each due to the optional Megaplier feature. The other five Match 5 tickets, sold in California, Pennsylvania, Texas (two), and West Virginia, won the standard second-tier prize.
