Florida Legislator Accuses DeSantis of Responsibly for Jacksonville Shooting

Florida state Representative Angie Nixon (D) strongly criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) in an impassioned speech following a racially motivated shooting incident in Jacksonville, where three Black individuals were killed. Nixon, who represents the district where the tragedy occurred, expressed her outrage towards DeSantis’ anti-woke policies, which she believes contributed to the attack. She went on to say that the governor has blood on his hands and his actions have been nothing more than a dog whistle to incite violence against the Black community. Nixon made these remarks during an interview with MSNBC on Sunday.

In response to the shooting, DeSantis condemned the attack and stated at a press conference that targeting individuals based on their race has no place in Florida. However, DeSantis has faced criticism for his support of loosening gun restrictions, his opposition to what he calls “woke” policies, and his endorsement of controversial teaching standards for Black history in the state.

Nixon, along with other Black lawmakers, has repeatedly warned DeSantis about the consequences of his rhetoric. She referenced an offensive remark made by DeSantis during his 2018 campaign against his Black Democratic opponent Andrew Gillum, stating that his agenda has been pushing attacks on the Black community since he took office. Nixon condemned Republican leadership in Florida for their continual assault on Black lives, erasure of Black history, and promotion of propaganda to children, all of which contribute to the devaluation of Black lives.

Nixon appeared alongside DeSantis at a Jacksonville vigil, where the governor was booed by attendees. She later tweeted that DeSantis needs to apologize for his part in the attack. In an emotional message, Nixon expressed her anger towards DeSantis and the Republican Party of Florida, pledging not to stay silent in the face of their harmful actions.
