Florida Healing Church Head, 65, and Sons Sentenced to Prison for Peddling Bleach as a ‘Miracle COVID, HIV, and Autism Cure’

A Miami federal court has sentenced a father named Mark Grenon and his three sons, Jonathan, Joseph, and Jordan, to up to 12 years in prison for their involvement in a scheme where they sold toxic bleach as a ‘miracle cure’ for the coronavirus. The court found them guilty of conspiring to defraud the U.S. government and FDA by distributing an unapproved and misbranded drug.

The Grenons started selling a product called Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS) in 2010. MMS is a chemical solution that contains sodium chlorite and, when mixed with water and citric acid, turns into chlorine dioxide, a powerful bleach typically used in industrial water treatment and textile bleaching. The family claimed that ingesting MMS could treat, prevent, and cure COVID-19. They set up a fake Florida church website to deceive people and continued selling the product throughout the pandemic.

The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) never approved MMS for the treatment of COVID-19 or any other use. The FDA strongly urged consumers not to purchase or use MMS, as it is equivalent to drinking bleach and can cause dangerous side effects such as severe vomiting, diarrhea, and life-threatening low blood pressure. Despite these warnings, the Grenons defied FDA orders to stop distributing the toxic substance in April 2020, which led to criminal charges and a raid on their home in Bradenton, Florida.

During their trial, the Grenons represented themselves and were characterized by prosecutors as con men using their Genesis II Church of Health and Healing website as a front to defraud consumers and the US government. They sold tens of thousands of bottles of MMS nationwide, making false claims that it could cure various diseases, including cancer and HIV/AIDS.

The Grenons were in possession of nearly 10,000 pounds of sodium chlorite powder and thousands of bottles of MMS in a dirty shed in Jonathan Grenon’s backyard. The blue chemical drums containing the powder had warning labels stating that it was toxic, flammable, and highly dangerous to consume.

Jonathan and Jordan were arrested in Bradenton, while Joseph fled to Colombia but was later extradited back to the US. Upon hearing their guilty verdict, Joseph stated that they would be appealing. The Grenons’ fraudulent actions may have caused harm and multiple deaths over the years.

The Genesis II Church of Health and Healing was a fake church created to avoid government regulation and prosecution. The Grenons claimed that MMS could only be obtained through a ‘donation’ to the church, but these ‘donations’ were mandatory and set at specific amounts, essentially making them sales prices. The Grenons manufactured the solution in their shed and continued selling it even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In court, it was revealed that the family was making an average of $32,000 per month before the pandemic, but their earnings skyrocketed to $132,000 per month as the coronavirus spread. This case was the first pandemic-related enforcement action in Florida. Throughout the legal proceedings, the Grenons threatened the federal judge presiding over the case, stating that they would use violence if the government tried to enforce the court orders to stop their distribution of MMS.
