Over 9,600 flights experienced delays and 1,405 were canceled on Sunday due to thunderstorms causing disruptions in air travel. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily halted departures to major airports serving Washington D.C. in order to conduct repairs on a power panel at an air traffic control facility.

Around 6 p.m. ET, the FAA issued ground stops for Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, and Dulles International Airport, preventing flights from taking off to these destinations. However, the orders were lifted within an hour.

In a statement, the FAA confirmed that departures to D.C.-area airports have resumed and repairs on the communications power panel have been completed. The agency assured that a backup system safely managed communications during the repairs. As of 7:15 p.m., delays at Washington Dulles were averaging around 90 minutes.

On Saturday, an additional 7,200 U.S. flights experienced delays due to inclement weather. Throughout Sunday, weather conditions continued to cause disruptions at airports from Miami to Boston to Detroit.

Newark Liberty International Airport saw more than 500 delayed flights. This airport serves as a major hub for United Airlines, which experienced over 1,159 delayed mainline flights on Sunday, accounting for 40% of its entire network according to FlightAware. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines also posted significant delays, with 36% and 34% of their mainline schedules affected, respectively. JetBlue Airways, based in New York, faced 579 delays, which impacted 55% of its planned schedule.
