Flight attendants at American Airlines threaten to go on strike

In a push for better compensation and benefits, American Airlines flight attendants have voted to authorize union leaders to call for a strike. With more than 99% of members supporting the measure, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants is prepared to threaten a work stoppage if ongoing negotiations don’t yield satisfactory results through a mediator. While the airline recently agreed to a new contract with pilots that includes a 40% pay raise, flight attendants have not seen a raise since January 2019 and are demanding a 35% across-the-board salary increase, along with a 6% annual wage increase over a three-year contract. Additionally, the union is seeking an increase in onboard staffing numbers that were reduced due to the COVID pandemic, as well as improvements in the company’s 401(k) match and contribution. The flight attendants union picketed at Ronald Reagan National Airport, highlighting their demands for pay raises. Federal law mandates that mediators must rule that further negotiations would be futile before a legal work stoppage can be initiated. The outcome of the strike authorization vote does not impact operations at American Airlines, as the company continues negotiations with the union.
