A task force comprised of multiple agencies has been established to combat “flash mob” retail robberies in the Southland. Since its formation earlier this week, the task force, known as the Organized Retail Crime Taskforce (ORCT), has already made 11 arrests, according to authorities on Thursday.
The ORCT consists of personnel from various law enforcement agencies including the Los Angeles, Glendale, Beverly Hills, and Burbank police departments, the California Highway Patrol, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
In a statement, the LAPD said, “The city of Los Angeles and neighboring cities have recently experienced an increase in ‘flash-mob’ style retail crime incidents conducted by multiple suspects targeting retail establishments throughout the Los Angeles region.”
Upon the formation of the ORCT, detectives took on the responsibility of investigating nine cases of organized retail crimes in the city of Los Angeles. The LAPD stated, “Many of these retail theft cases have connections to other retail crimes that occurred in neighboring cities.”
As of Wednesday, the ORCT had made 11 robbery arrests directly related to four of the nine cases they took on. The locations involved in these cases include:
– The Versace store at Beverly Center, located at 8500 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles
– The Warehouse Shoe Store, located at 6251 York Blvd., Highland Park
– The Nordstrom at Topanga Mall, located at 6600 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Canoga Park
– The Yves Saint Laurent at The Americana at Brand, located at 889 Americana Way, Glendale
The investigations are still ongoing. Anyone with information about these types of crimes or who knows the identity of any additional suspects is encouraged to contact Detective Arnold of the Organized Retail Crime TaskForce at 818-374-9420.
