Apple announced on Saturday that it will release a software update to address customer complaints regarding the latest models of the iPhone 15, which were launched just over a week ago, and are reportedly overheating.

Apple has acknowledged that the new iPhone models are experiencing heating issues due to a combination of bugs in iOS 17, bugs in apps, and a temporary set-up phase.

An Apple spokesperson informed CNBC:

“We have identified a few conditions which can cause iPhone to run warmer than expected. The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity. We have also found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users and will be addressed in a software update. Another issue involves some recent updates to third-party apps that are causing them to overload the system. We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out.”

Following the release of the new iPhone 15 models earlier this month, users have taken to Apple’s forums, Reddit, and social media platforms to express complaints about all four models overheating. CNBC’s review of the new iPhone Pros also noted that the iPhone 15 Pro Max experienced heating problems.

“I just got the iPhone 15 Pro today and it’s so hot I can’t even hold it for very long!” wrote one commenter on Apple’s forums.

Apple’s new high-end models, the $999 iPhone 15 Pro and $1,199 iPhone 15 Pro Max, feature a redesigned titanium enclosure with an aluminum frame that facilitates easier repairs. Apple clarified that the overheating issue of the new models is unrelated to the titanium chassis design.

Instead, Apple attributes the problem to bugs in specific apps and iOS, which can be resolved through software updates. Apple assured that the upcoming iOS 17 update to fix the issue will not affect the devices’ performance.

Apple’s website explains that users may notice their phones feeling warmer when setting up from a backup, wirelessly charging, using graphics-intensive apps or games, or streaming high-quality video. Apple states that it is normal for devices to become warm during heavy usage, and unless iPhones display a temperature warning, they are safe to use.

Still long lines

So far, the new iPhones appear to be selling well, with shipping times for the devices sometimes extending to weeks, and long lines forming in front of Apple stores on launch day.

“Interestingly, lead times for the 15 Pro Max, 15 Plus, and 15 are tracking higher compared to their predecessors (e.g., iPhone 14 Series), and the 15 Pro Max currently has the longest lead time we have ever seen across all SKUs since we started tracking lead time data,” noted JPMorgan analysts in a recent report.

However, Ming-Chi Kuo, a notable Apple supply chain analyst, warned in a blog post last week that the iPhone 15’s heat issue could impact sales negatively.

While Apple has faced significant launch issues in the past, they have not had a serious impact on the company’s long-term prospects. For instance, the iPhone 4, unveiled in 2010, had a design flaw that led to dropped calls. Apple provided free cases to mitigate the problem. In 2012, shortly after the iPhone 5 launch, Apple CEO Tim Cook apologized for the buggy and unreliable Apple Maps. Similarly, the iPhone 6, released in 2014, faced criticism for bending under pressure.
