Los Angeles County reports first West Nile virus death of the year
Tragic news came on Thursday as health officials announced the first death related to West Nile virus in Los Angeles County this year. The victim, who remains anonymous, resided in the San Fernando Valley and passed away from West Nile-associated neuro-invasive disease. The county Department of Public Health issued a statement expressing condolences to the family and friends affected by this unfortunate event. Dr. Muntu Davis, the county health officer, emphasized the importance of protecting oneself from mosquitoes in order to prevent the spread of the virus. Employing mosquito repellent and taking measures to prevent mosquito breeding near homes are key preventive measures against West Nile virus.
Infected mosquitoes are the primary means of transmitting the virus to humans.
In most cases, infected individuals experience mild symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and fatigue. However, individuals above 50 years of age and those with chronic medical conditions are at a higher risk of severe illness, which can affect the brain, spinal cord, and result in conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis, or paralysis.
Excluding Long Beach and Pasadena, which have separate health departments, the county has confirmed 19 cases of West Nile virus in humans this year.
Experts recommend the following preventive measures:
– Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed
– Ensure that window and door screens are intact
– Use mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535
– Limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours at dawn and dusk
– Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and long pants, when outdoors
