First Two Cases of Deadly West Nile Virus Reported in Massachusetts

Massachusetts reports the first human cases of West Nile virus in the state this year, with two residents contracting the mosquito-borne illness. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) disclosed that a woman in her 70s was exposed to the virus outside the state, and a man in his 40s was infected in Middlesex County. The Greater Boston area, including Middlesex, Norfolk, and Suffolk counties, as well as parts of Bristol, Plymouth, Worcester, Hampden, Hampshire, and Berkshire counties, is at a moderate risk level for the virus. Public Health Commissioner Robert Goldstein, MD, PhD, stated that August and September are the months with the highest risk of contracting the virus. Mosquito populations carrying the virus are larger this year, with an increase in positive mosquito samples across the state. Last year, eight human cases of West Nile virus were identified in Massachusetts. Since its arrival in the US in 1999, West Nile virus has become the leading mosquito-borne disease in the country. The virus is typically transmitted through mosquito bites and does not spread through contact with infected animals or birds or through coughing or sneezing. Most people infected with the virus do not display symptoms, while around one in five may experience fever, body aches, headache, joint pain, diarrhea, rash, or vomiting. In rare cases, the virus can lead to serious neurological conditions such as encephalitis or meningitis. It is advised to seek medical attention if symptoms of serious illness develop.
