Evaluation of the presidential candidates’ performance by likely Republican primary voters before and after the debate
Using a five-point scale ranging from “excellent” to “terrible,” we asked respondents to rate their expectations and evaluations of each candidate. Each rating was then converted to a numerical value between 1 and 5, where “excellent” was 5, “very good” was 4, “about average” was 3, “poor” was 2, and “terrible” was 1. The scores were averaged to determine the overall performance for each candidate. Respondents who answered “don’t know” were excluded from the analysis.
Before the debate, our poll asked respondents to predict the performance of each candidate using a five-point scale from “excellent” to “terrible.” Following the debate, we asked the viewers to evaluate each candidate using the same scale.
The candidates largely met the expectations of Republican voters based on their average performance and expectation scores. DeSantis received the highest grade for his performance, closely followed by Haley and Ramaswamy. However, Haley’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as her expectations were only slightly above average. On the other hand, Ramaswamy faced the highest expectations among all debaters. At the opposite end, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson had both the lowest expectations and the lowest grade for his performance during the debate.
