First NFL Male Coach Comes Out as Gay

In a remarkable moment for LGBTQ+ representation in the world of sports, Kevin Maxen, the strength coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, has made history by becoming the first male coach in a major US men’s professional sports league to come out as gay. Maxen, a former Division III linebacker, has been with the Jaguars since 2021 and recently shared his story with OutSports. He hopes that by living his life openly, he can inspire others who may be struggling with their sexuality. Maxen expressed his desire to no longer feel the need to hide or lie about his relationship with his boyfriend, Nick, whom he has been with for two years.

Maxen has been overwhelmed by the immense support he has received from various individuals, including his old high school friends and members of the Jaguars organization. One of the first people he confided in was former Jaguars center Brandon Linder, who described it as an honor and an incredibly humbling experience. Maxen also had a conversation with Carl Nassib, who made history as the first active NFL player to come out as gay.

Team owner Shad Khan praised Maxen, emphasizing his importance to the Jacksonville Jaguars and the community. Khan expressed his anticipation of seeing Maxen at training camp and his hope that Maxen can approach each day with confidence, freedom, and peace throughout the season. Khan further acknowledged the significance of Maxen’s announcement by highlighting that Katie Sowers, an assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers, broke barriers in 2017 as the first coach in a major men’s league to come out as gay.
