First Licenses for Magic Mushroom ‘Facilitators’ Granted in Oregon

Oregon’s groundbreaking experiment with legalized magic mushrooms reached a significant milestone as the first facilitators who will guide clients through their psychedelic experiences received state licenses. This development comes after voters approved the regulated use of psilocybin through a 2020 ballot measure. The anticipation has been steadily growing for the day when people can access this drug known for its therapeutic value.

However, despite the investment of thousands of dollars by hundreds of individuals in this emerging industry, the rollout has been slower than expected. Service centers, where customers can safely consume psilocybin in controlled environments, have yet to be licensed. Additionally, the laboratories where the products must be tested have not been approved.

Tori Armbrust, who obtained a license to grow magic mushrooms earlier this year, highlights the financial burden and pressure faced by individuals like herself. Having spent a substantial portion of her life savings on obtaining licenses, setting up a growing space, and awaiting the lab testing requirements, Armbrust anxiously awaits the opening of service centers to sell her product.

The Oregon Health Authority, specifically the Oregon Psilocybin Services, acknowledges the delays and assures that licenses for service centers and labs will be issued in the coming months. However, with the novelty of this industry, no one can predict with certainty how everything will unfold.

Despite the challenges, about 100 individuals have recently completed a course to become facilitators and earn their certification. So far, three manufacturing licenses and three facilitator licenses have been issued.

Overall, while Oregon’s experiment with legalized magic mushrooms shows promise, there are still logistical hurdles to overcome. The industry eagerly awaits the opening of service centers and licensed labs, which will facilitate the safe and regulated use of psilocybin.
