An unfortunate incident involving a first-grade teacher at Sunrise Elementary School in East Los Angeles has come to light. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced on Wednesday that Martin Reyes Jr., a 29-year-old teacher, has been charged with sexually assaulting six female students. The charges include 10 counts of lewd acts on a child under the age of 14.
The investigation into Reyes began after one of the students bravely reported on May 22 that she had been sexually abused by him. Following this report, authorities intensified their efforts.
During their investigation, authorities uncovered disturbing evidence suggesting that Reyes had sexually abused these six students during recess in the classroom. The District Attorney’s Office has been diligently working on building a strong case against him.
Reyes, a resident of East Los Angeles, was arrested by detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Juvenile Division on Monday. He has since been held in custody. The Juvenile Division’s Abused Child Section is urging the public to come forward with any information that may help identify additional victims.
A hearing to determine the sufficiency of evidence to proceed with the trial against Reyes is scheduled for September 27 in the downtown Los Angeles courthouse. The school has not yet provided information on Reyes’ current employment status.
