Los Angeles City Councilman Kevin de León recently unveiled an innovative solution to the city’s housing crisis – a pre-approved, free Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Standard Plan. The plan aims to expand housing opportunities by simplifying and expediting the construction and approval process for ADUs, ultimately saving homeowners between $20,000 and $30,000 in architectural and design costs.
Recognizing the significant burden of affordable housing in Los Angeles, de León utilized discretionary funds to develop this groundbreaking initiative. With the high cost of living and increasing demand for housing, residents have been struggling to find and maintain affordable homes. As the “homeless capital of the nation,” Los Angeles is acutely aware of the need for bold action and diverse housing options.
By implementing the ADU Standard Plan, Angelenos will now have the opportunity to build ADUs on their properties more swiftly, contributing to the city’s housing supply. With over 200,000 eligible single-family parcels in the city, this plan has the potential to bring thousands of new dwelling units into reality.
During a press conference, Councilman de León expressed gratitude for the collaboration from the Dept. of Building and Safety, L.A.’s Bureau of Engineering, Lehrer Architects, and Kadre Architects in bringing the ADU Standard Plan to fruition. While this plan is undoubtedly a significant step forward, de León acknowledges that further policy reforms and streamlining efforts are necessary to build various housing types, from ADUs to apartment complexes.
