The resignation of Joe Kennedy, the football coach at Washington’s Bremerton High School, has shocked many after the US Supreme Court allowed him to keep his position. In his resignation letter, Kennedy stated that he felt singled out and retaliated against by the school district, leading to his decision. The Seattle Times reported on this development. Even before the game, Kennedy had hinted that his return might be short-lived, only focusing on the court victory that allowed him to pray on the field. The Kitsap Sun reported that Bremerton won the game against Mount Douglas with a score of 27-12, but no spectators joined Kennedy in prayer as they did in 2015.

Recent court documents have revealed that Joe Kennedy will be reinstated as an assistant coach of the Bremerton High School football team. The decision was backed by the Supreme Court, which ruled in June that Kennedy’s First Amendment rights were violated when he was fired for leading team prayers. According to ABC News, Kennedy is expected to return to his job by March 15, 2023. The documents also state that the Bremerton School District is prohibited from retaliating against Kennedy or stopping him from praying on the field, as reported by Fox News.

Kennedy’s attorney has confirmed that his client will be moving back to Washington to continue his part-time coaching position. He is expected to return to the field for the fall 2023 football season. However, there are still unanswered questions regarding how Kennedy’s prayers will be accommodated in line with the Supreme Court’s ruling, according to a district spokesperson.
