Fire Erupts at Aguanga’s Cahuilla Indian Reservation Edge

A brush fire ignited on Thursday on the outskirts of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation, south of Aguanga. The fire scorched 225 acres and spread into the surrounding hills, with small fires emerging ahead of the main blaze.

Known as the “Bonny Fire,” no injuries were reported. Riverside County Fire Department received the report of the fire at around 2:50 p.m. in the Bonny and Barber lanes area. As of 7:10 p.m., the fire was 5% contained.

A team consisting of various engine and hand crews from Riverside County, U.S. Forest Service, and other agencies was dispatched to the remote site. They faced moderate fire activity in the midst of medium vegetation, with several houses and outbuildings in the path of the flames, revealed an official from Riverside County Fire Department.

To combat the fire, six Cal Fire air tankers and three water-dropping helicopters conducted multiple runs, successfully containing the left flank of the blaze and minimizing the threat to most of the structures, stated the department.

As the fire advanced, worsened by light winds, it crossed a road and spread into the hills, posing challenges for ground personnel on the scene.

In addition to managing the main fire, the crews also dealt with spot fires that appeared outside the main conflagration, relying on air support to suppress them.

An evacuation order was issued on Thursday around 7:45 p.m. for the area south of Bailey Lane, west of Chapman Road, north of Running Springs Road, and east of Bonny Lane.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

For those affected, a reception and care center has been set up at Hamilton High School.
