Filmmaker of ‘Ako si Ninoy’ Reveals Insider Tips on How to Secure a Distribution Deal in Cannes

Filmmaker Vince Tañada considers making it to the Cannes Film Festival a prestigious accomplishment. His two films, “Ako si Ninoy” and “The Embalmer,” were included in the Market Screening category at the 67th Cannes Film Festival in France. Alongside them, six other Filipino films were featured in the event. Tañada shares the rigorous process he went through to secure a spot at Cannes, including the screening of 125 films in the same category. He credits Evelyn Vargas, a former actress and festival programmer, for guiding him through the application process and helping him join their booth at the film market.

Tañada emphasizes the challenges of obtaining accreditation and shares his experience of receiving it upon arrival. He highlights the importance of having a badge to attend the film screenings and mentions that only producers and distributors were eligible for badges. Despite the challenges, both “Ninoy” and “Embalmer” attracted large audiences due to the extensive promotions by the Filipino press. Tañada closed five distribution deals for his films and is considering signing with the distribution company that offers the widest reach.

Interestingly, Tañada recently signed with a Swiss production and management company, Maison ZBZ, owned by Evelyn Vargas’ daughter, Dee Zialcita. Bela Padilla, an actress-director who owns her production outfit called Risky Marmalade, also joined Zialcita’s management. Tañada reflects on his Cannes experience, affirming that it was a life-changing opportunity and a chance to represent the Philippines. He observes that at a top-tier film festival like Cannes, everyone is considered an artist, and the notion of stardom fades away. Tañada is currently working on a fantasy-horror film titled “Hiwaga,” featuring Isko Moreno and Joaquin Domagoso.
