Film Review: A Kind of Kidnapping – A Sleazy MP is Unexpectedly Involved in a Darkly Comical Tale of Intrigue

T

This dark and budget-friendly British comedy revolves around Richard “Hardline” Hardy, a corrupt Member of Parliament who bears a striking resemblance to a recent prime minister. The story follows Hardy’s kidnapping by a pair of inexperienced individuals, leading to unexpected opportunities for the MP to gain popularity with the British public. With his video going viral on YouTube and garnering millions of views, Hardy sees the potential for both infamy and personal gain.

Hardy’s captors are Maggie, an unemployed actress, and her boyfriend Brian, a taxi driver who studies coding in his free time. The unlikely circumstances surrounding Hardy’s kidnapping, which occurs while he travels through various regions to connect with working-class citizens (although he secretly looks down on them due to their lack of privilege), are revealed through flashbacks. As the ransom demands go unmet and Hardy’s wife refuses to pay, Maggie and Brian decide to release him. However, Hardy devises a plan to prolong the kidnapping, funding it himself and capitalizing on the priceless publicity.

The clever setup of this film, written and directed by Dan Clark, displays a distinct streak of cynicism reminiscent of the acclaimed sitcom, “The Thick of It.” Just like in Armando Iannucci’s series, there are no sympathetic characters in sight. Patrick Baladi fully embraces the role of Hardy, embodying three parts arrogance and two parts sleaze. However, my enjoyment of the film was dampened by a plot development that, in the end, made the characters and the film itself almost unlikable.

A Kind of Kidnapping is set to release in UK cinemas on July 13th and on digital platforms on July 24th.
