A 28-year-old woman who killed an 87-year-old Broadway singing coach in a senseless attack has pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter. Lauren Pazienza will be sentenced to eight years in prison, a lesser sentence than the possible 25 years if the case had gone to trial, according to the AP. The incident occurred on March 10 last year, when Pazienza shoved Barbara Gustern from behind, causing her to suffer brain damage. Gustern tragically passed away five days later. Pazienza, who has been in custody since May last year, will be formally sentenced next month and is not allowed to appeal under the plea deal.

Lauren Pazienza, the alleged attacker in the fatal shoving of Broadway vocal coach Barbara Gustern, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. Prosecutors described the events leading up to the assault, stating that Pazienza had consumed multiple glasses of wine while celebrating her upcoming wedding with her fiance. The night took a turn when Pazienza had a “temper tantrum” after being told that the park she was in was closing soon. This incident ultimately led to the tragic encounter with Gustern. Pazienza faces charges of manslaughter and assault, which could result in up to 25 years behind bars. Despite claims by her defense team that the manslaughter charge lacks solid evidence, she was ordered to be held without bail.

According to prosecutors, Pazienza’s anger escalated as she cursed at a Parks Department worker, threw food at her fiance, and stormed out of the park. A block away, she encountered Gustern, who she ran across the street to confront. The altercation resulted in Gustern hitting her head on the ground or a metal fence, causing severe bleeding. Emergency services arrived, but Gustern remained unconscious and passed away five days later. Pazienza stayed at the scene until the ambulance arrived and engaged in a fight with her fiance, blaming him for ruining her night. In a later conversation with her fiance, Pazienza admitted to pushing someone, claiming that Gustern may have provoked her, although she wasn’t sure. After the incident gained media attention, Pazienza went into hiding before turning herself in. Despite her defense’s arguments, the judge ordered Pazienza to be held without bail.
