A 39-year-old man named Lawrence Michael Dileva from Nuevo has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and other charges in connection with a drunk driving incident that resulted in the death of a 65-year-old woman in Mead Valley. This convicted felon has been sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison. The plea was made directly to the judge, despite opposition from the District Attorney’s Office.
“Our office strongly objected to the plea due to the defendant’s prior convictions,” said Brooke Beare, spokesperson for the agency.
However, the judge set aside Dileva’s prior strikes and did not factor them into his sentence. This decision spared the defendant from a potential 40 to 55 years to life behind bars, which the prosecutors believed was justified.
Despite the prosecution’s objections, Judge Hollenhorst imposed the chosen term of imprisonment. The defendant’s prison commitment order was signed by the judge on Thursday.
Dileva caused a three-vehicle crash on Cajalco Road, east of Carpinus Drive, on January 28, 2022, resulting in the death of Demiris Reid from Nuevo. According to the California Highway Patrol, Dileva was driving east in a Ford Explorer when he lost control, crossed the double yellow lines, and collided with a westbound Chevrolet Equinox driven by the victim. A Honda Civic trailing the Ford also crashed into the SUV.
Emergency services arrived at the scene, located approximately two miles northwest of Perris, and attempted life-saving measures, but Reid was pronounced dead. Dileva, on the other hand, suffered moderate injuries and was treated at Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley.
The driver of the Honda was unharmed in the incident.
Previous court records reveal that Dileva has been convicted of DUI gross vehicular manslaughter, receiving a stolen vehicle, burglary, and distribution of illegal drugs.
