The 16th Women’s Super Senior Amateur Championship took place at Whiteface Club and Resort in Lake Placid, featuring three talented golfers from the Capital Region. In an exciting competition, Karen Feldman of Columbia emerged victorious, securing her first individual New York State title with a one-shot lead over Susan Kahler from Ballston Spa. Mary Jo Kelly, the defending champion from Wolferts Roost Country Club, finished two shots behind.
During the first day of the championship, Kelly and Deborah Enders of Central New York set the pace as co-leaders. Kahler trailed closely behind by one stroke. However, it was Feldman’s impressive performance on the second day that led her to triumph. She shot a remarkable 76, surpassing all other golfers in the Super Senior division (age 65 and above). Her comeback was highlighted by birdies on the 17th and 18th holes, ultimately resulting in a 16-over finish (82-76—158). Despite facing a challenge on the sixth hole with a triple bogey, where her tee shot fell short of clearing the downhill dogleg hazard, Feldman managed to overcome the setback.
Reflecting on her win, Feldman acknowledged the difficulties she faced the previous day, particularly with her driver and putter, which are typically her strengths. However, she approached the final day with a relaxed mindset, initially not believing she had a chance due to being four strokes behind. Fortunately, her driving improved significantly, while her putting required more finesse. Nevertheless, she made crucial putts when it mattered most.
Feldman credited her advantageous position as the second group of golfers, emphasizing that it allowed her to play more freely. Despite the challenges she encountered the day before, she remained focused throughout her round, leading to her success.
This victory marks Feldman’s second state championship. In 2021, she partnered with Patricia Mayne to secure her first state title at the Senior Women’s Four-Ball championship hosted by Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club.
For Kahler, last year’s State Senior Amateur champion, her performance in this year’s competition consisted of rounds of 79 and 80. Moving up to the Super Senior division, which played on a par-71 layout measuring 4,954 yards, Kahler showcased her skills. In 2013, she claimed the title and also achieved two state Senior Mixed Team titles alongside her brother, Gary, in 2013 and 2014.
Simultaneously, the 70th NYS Women’s Senior Amateur Championship was held. Ingrid Narken of Thendara Golf Course emerged as the champion, finishing at 6-over (75-73—148) on the 5,190-yard par-71 course. Carolyn Mancini of Binghamton secured second place with an 8-over finish (76-74—150).
Mary Sicard of Queensbury Country Club secured fifth place, 10 shots behind the leader, with scores of 78 and 80. Sicard previously won the NYS Women’s Senior Amateur championship three times, with victories in 2016, 2017, and 2019 at Bristol Harbour.
In addition to these outstanding performances, Linda Kolnick of Canajoharie placed sixth, while Kathy Harkins of Ballston Spa Country Club finished ninth in the Super Senior Division.
Overall, the 16th Women’s Super Senior Amateur Championship showcased the remarkable skills and determination of the Capital Region’s golfers, with Karen Feldman emerging as the deserving champion.
