Feinstein Left Confused by Colleague’s Actions

During a committee hearing on Thursday, Senator Dianne Feinstein experienced some confusion and had to be reminded to cast a vote by another senator. According to CNN, California’s senior senator, who recently returned to the Capitol after a two-month absence due to health issues, attempted to give a speech during an Appropriations Committee hearing on the defense spending bill. However, she was only supposed to cast a simple “aye” or “nay” vote. At first, Feinstein did not respond, so her fellow Democrat, Senator Patty Murray, repeatedly urged her to say “aye.”

As Feinstein started her speech, an aide also informed her that it was not the appropriate time for it, as reported by Yahoo News. After Murray’s final reminder, Feinstein leaned back in her chair and said, “Aye.” (The moment can be seen in a video from NBC News.) The Appropriations Committee holds significant influence, and its members are often among the oldest senators due to the seniority system. Feinstein, who is 90 years old, is the oldest member of the Senate overall and has announced that she will not seek reelection next year. Since her return, she has displayed confusion on multiple occasions, including voting in favor of a Republican amendment during another committee’s hearing. (Senator Mitch McConnell experienced a similar episode the day before.)
