Federal authorities accuse United Airlines employees of stealing marijuana from checked baggage

San Francisco International Airport was at the center of a sophisticated marijuana theft ring, masterminded by two United Airlines cargo agents, Joel Lamont Dunn and Adrian Webb. These agents, along with their associates, orchestrated a scheme to steal marijuana from passengers’ luggage and profited up to $10,000 per week by selling the contraband. A criminal complaint filed with the US District Court of Northern California on June 9 revealed that the operation had been ongoing since 2020.

The allegations came to light when an informant, who was working alongside Dunn and Webb as a ramp cargo agent, shared their knowledge of the conspiracy. According to the informant, Dunn approached them to participate in stealing marijuana from checked baggage at the airport. In return, the informant was paid around $2,000 in cash per shift, with additional compensation for larger quantities stolen.

The criminal complaint highlighted Dunn as the leader of the operation, with Webb serving as his right-hand man. Although it remains unclear who was transporting such large amounts of marijuana through airport security, the informant’s testimony shed light on the inner workings of the theft ring.

Both Dunn and Webb have been charged with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. They were released on bail, with Dunn’s bail set at $75,000 and Webb’s at $50,000. The trial date is yet to be determined.

Federal agents became aware of Dunn and Webb following a separate incident where the pair were robbed at gunpoint in the employee parking lot near their personal vehicles. Video surveillance footage captured Dunn, Webb, and other employees handling black trash bags outside the secure airport area, further supporting the allegations of their involvement in the marijuana theft scheme.

The operation reportedly earned Dunn and Webb $10,000 per week, a substantial sum that the feds are keen to halt. Dunn and Webb have yet to comment on the matter, and the Post has reached out to United Airlines for a statement. In October of last year, the authorities intercepted two individuals carrying two large boxes and a large black plastic bag near the airport’s International Garage. Federal investigators discovered 14 kilograms (30 pounds) of marijuana, and these individuals were frequently observed with Dunn and Webb in surveillance footage.
