FDCP Takes Initiative to Revive 2 Vilma Santos Movies and Offer Complimentary Workshops

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) has partnered with Regal Entertainment to restore two Vilma Santos films, namely Mike de Leon’s “Sister Stella L” and National Artist Ishmael Bernal’s “Relasyon.” This collaboration aims to preserve and revive these classic films. According to Jose Javier Reyes, a film and TV director who serves as a technical adviser for the FDCP, there are many films that have been lost or damaged due to improper handling in the past. The FDCP is committed to preventing further loss and is actively seeking more movies to restore.

Reyes also shared the FDCP’s plans for the future, including their intention to sponsor a Filipino film block at the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (Filmart) in March 2024. During their recent trip to Hong Kong, Reyes realized the significance of Filmart for Asian films and expressed the need for a stronger presence for the Philippines. In collaboration with Viva Entertainment, the FDCP plans to establish a dedicated block for Filipino filmmakers who cannot afford individual booths, ensuring a more prominent representation.

Reyes emphasized the importance of collaborating and making an impact in major film markets like Cannes, France (Marché du Film) and Busan, South Korea (Asian Contents and Film Market). He highlighted the need to create films that resonate not only with local audiences but also with an international audience. As Reyes stated, all it takes is one breakthrough film like “Parasite” to captivate the world.

The FDCP is actively encouraging Filipino producers to create more films, as they have already received invitations from various international festivals. To support local filmmakers, the FDCP provides film grants to participants of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival and the Metro Manila Film Festival. These grants aim to stimulate creativity and showcase Filipino talent on a global platform.

In addition to film grants, the FDCP, through its education division led by Rica Arevalo, is organizing workshops for actors and filmmakers. A free acting workshop, facilitated by Meisner Studio Manila, is scheduled for July 10. Workshops on video production and cinematography, in partnership with the Mowelfund Film Institute, will take place in September. The FDCP plans to conduct these workshops in different parts of the country, aiming to reach aspiring filmmakers nationwide. Furthermore, an intensive workshop covering various aspects of filmmaking will be held in Subic, Zambales, in October. Lastly, a basic acting workshop for students will be conducted by actor Rolly Inocencio in November, at no cost.

Reyes emphasized the importance of taking the craft of acting seriously, noting that being a celebrity is merely a fringe benefit. Actors who take their craft seriously are the ones who have longevity in the industry.

The FDCP’s efforts to restore classic films, support local filmmakers, and provide educational opportunities for aspiring talents reflect their commitment to the growth and development of the Philippine film industry. With their initiatives and collaborations, the FDCP aims to make a significant impact on both the local and international film scenes.
