FC Cincinnati’s Matt Miazga Suspended: MLS Takes Action After Confrontation with Referees

FC Cincinnati’s standout center back, Matt Miazga, was recently hailed as the 2023 MLS defender of the year. However, his celebration was cut short by a suspension that will see him missing the Eastern Conference final and a potential MLS Cup appearance.

MLS has issued a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine to Miazga after he entered the officials’ locker room following FC Cincinnati’s victory over the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Nov. 4. Additionally, he has been mandated to undergo a behavioral assessment through the Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health (SABH) Program. The severity of the suspension could be reduced based on Miazga’s compliance with recommended treatment programs.

The Professional Soccer Referees Association (PSRA) was vocal in calling for Major League Soccer to take action after the incident, emphasizing the need to uphold league policy and sporting integrity. They reported that Miazga gained unauthorized entry into the locker room and displayed aggressive behavior when confronted by security.

However, both FC Cincinnati coach Pat Noonan and sources from The Athletic argued that the details of Miazga’s entry into the locker room had been embellished. Noonan stated that Miazga’s actions were misrepresented and expressed hope for a resolution that would allow him to return to the pitch.

According to sources briefed on the issue, Miazga sought to speak with referee Victor Rivas about the yellow cards he received, which ultimately led to his suspension. The contentious moment occurred during a last-second game-winning goal that was disallowed and the subsequent penalty shootout.

Following the suspension, Miazga watched FC Cincinnati’s semifinal victory against Philadelphia from a suite, with his absence due to the separate yellow-card suspension. The league’s press release confirmed that his three-game suspension would be served during the remainder of FC Cincinnati’s games in the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs.
