FC Barcelona Coach Xavi Receives Red Card and Criticizes ‘Embarrassing’ Referee

FC Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez and midfielder Frenkie de Jong have expressed their dissatisfaction with the referee’s decision in the 0-0 draw against Getafe on Sunday.

Barcelona failed to secure a victory in their opening La Liga match at the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

The game was highly physical, and Raphinha was sent off with a second yellow card just before halftime for elbowing Gaston Alvarez.

After protests from Barcelona over a potential red card for Getafe’s Djene Dakonam, who brought down Ez Abde as the last man, Xavi received a straight red card and had to watch the rest of the match from the stands.

When asked about the incident, Xavi revealed: “I told him that they were allowing many fouls against us, which is why he sent me off.”

“The recent meeting with referees emphasized the need for better understanding of coaches’ frustrations due to the tense nature of the game,” Xavi added.

Xavi further expressed his disappointment with the result, stating: “We tried our best against a tough opponent and earned only a single point. It’s unfortunate.”

Xavi also criticized the quality of refereeing and questioned whether this was the image La Liga wanted to portray.

In regard to a controversial handball penalty call against Gavi instead of the defending player who fouled Ronald Araujo, Xavi commented: “I didn’t see Gavi’s hand anywhere. I was not satisfied with the meeting with the referees or their decisions today.”

Frenkie de Jong also called the refereeing an “embarrassment” and urged La Liga to take action against time-wasting tactics.

Xavi described the time wasting as “another embarrassment” and expressed his frustration with the situation.

With Xavi serving his suspension, De Jong and the team will aim for their first win of the season against Cadiz at home next week.
