FBI Assists Investigation as Driver Receives Jail Sentence for Deadly Crash Near Long Beach Pike

A 46-year-old man from Los Angeles has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 60-year-old woman from Long Beach was killed in a deliberate vehicle attack on a group of pedestrians, according to the police.

The incident took place at 6:34 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Shoreline Drive and Aquarium Way. The victim, Romelia Cuarenta Aguilar, was pronounced dead at the scene, while several other pedestrians were injured and hospitalized. Their condition is reported to be stable.

Authorities have confirmed that the FBI responded to the scene.

“At this time, there is no indication that this incident was an act of terror or related to the ongoing violence in Israel. However, the investigation is ongoing,” said the Long Beach Police Department on Sunday.

The suspect has been identified as 46-year-old Khalid Yagobbi from Los Angeles, according to the LBPD.

Police reports state that Yagobbi was driving eastbound in a white Chevrolet Bolt in the westbound lanes of Shoreline Drive. He ran a red light and collided with the pedestrians and multiple occupied vehicles without slowing down.

Witnesses stated that Aguilar was pushing a child in a stroller in the crosswalk when the car struck her and then hit several vehicles in the opposite lane.

Yagobbi remained at the scene and was taken to a hospital for treatment before being transferred to the Long Beach Jail, where he was arrested on suspicion of murder. His bail has been set at $2 million.

“On behalf of the Long Beach Police Department, I offer my deepest condolences to the family of Romelia Aguilar for their loss,” said Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish. “The violence and acts of terror overseas have caused concern and anxiety within our community, and this apparent act of violence has only added to that anxiety.

“The prompt response from our officers, detectives, and partners from the FBI has been crucial to this investigation. While there is no evidence linking this incident to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, we will remain vigilant as we thoroughly investigate every aspect of this crime,” Hebeish added.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the suspect or the crash to contact them at 562-570-7244.
