The unfortunate fatality took place at the intersection of Old Concord Road and Cobblestone Glen Drive around 4:15 p.m.
The Amtrak Piedmont Train 75 operates between Raleigh and Charlotte.
According to riders, the passenger train was only 10 minutes away from the station when the conductor abruptly stopped it, stating that someone had been hit.
Passenger Brittany Bowers recalled, “That’s kind of all I heard, and I was like, did he say something or someone?”
Amtrak officials stated that the individual who died was trespassing on the tracks.
Bowers described the impact, saying, “I thought it just hit something hard and it sounded like the wheels were kind of messing up.”
The incident caused significant delays for the train, inconveniencing passengers like Jamie Malcom, who was waiting to return from Charlotte to Raleigh.
Malcom commented on the abnormal situation, saying, “Usually when I come up, the train is usually already here on the tracks, so I knew something was up.”
Bowers praised the efforts of first responders in managing the situation, stating, “People out here care. They tried their hardest.”
Amtrak is collaborating with local law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation into the crash.
Fortunately, no passengers were injured onboard the train.
Due to the accident, Old Concord Road at Cobblestone Drive was closed, and traffic was rerouted through Torrence Grove Church Road and Cobblestone Glen Drive.
As of now, the identity of the individual killed has not been disclosed.
