A security guard was fatally stabbed and another injured at the Macy’s store in Center City, Philadelphia as they tried to stop a theft, according to police.
The incident unfolded on Monday at the Macy’s on 13th and Market streets when an unidentified suspect attempted to steal hats from the store. The suspect was confronted by security guards, who managed to recover the stolen merchandise.
After leaving the store, the suspect returned 15 minutes later and stabbed a 30-year-old guard in the neck. A 23-year-old security guard who tried to intervene was also stabbed in the face and arm.
The 30-year-old guard succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while the condition of the 23-year-old guard remains undisclosed.
The suspect fled the scene and discarded a knife on the SEPTA’s Market-Frankford Line platform. Authorities apprehended the suspect at the Somerset Station in the Kensington neighborhood.
SEPTA announced that passengers must use westbound platforms between the 15th and 8th Street stations following the incident.
