Aug. 29 (UPI) — In the seventh inning of the Atlanta Braves’ victory over the Colorado Rockies, two fans ran onto the field, sprinted towards star outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., and collided with him, causing him to fall. The incident took place at Coors Field in Denver.

An initial fan managed to reach Acuna in the outfield and put his arm around the player, even attempting to take a selfie-style photo with his phone. A security guard quickly intervened and removed the fan from the scene. However, during this exchange, another fan charged towards Acuna from a different direction, intending to hug him. Instead, the fan collided with Acuna, causing him to fall backward over a security guard and land on the ground. Both fans were subsequently removed from the field, allowing the game to continue.

When asked about the incident, Acuna stated, “I think the fans were out there and asking for pictures. I really couldn’t say anything because at that point, security was already there and we were already kind of tangled up, but security was able to get there and everything’s OK. We’re all OK, and I hope they’re OK.”

Earlier in the inning, Acuna stole his 60th base of the season, making him just the fourth player in history to achieve this feat while also hitting at least 20 home runs in the same season. He also hit his 29th home run of the year in the fifth inning. If he hits one more homer, he will become the first player in MLB history to record 30 homers and 60 steals in a single season.

Acuna, a strong contender for the National League MVP title, had an impressive performance in the game, going 4 for 5 with five RBIs, four runs scored, and two steals. He is currently hitting .335 for the season and leads MLB with 119 runs scored and a .418 on-base percentage, despite having the most plate appearances in the National League at 601. In the same game, Braves third baseman Austin Riley also had a notable performance, going 2 for 5 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored.

The Rockies (49-82) will host the Braves (85-45) again at 8:40 p.m. EDT on Tuesday in Denver.
