Family Time Wins Over PGA Tour for PGA Championship Star Michael Block

  • Michael Block’s exceptional performance at the PGA Championship turned him into an instant sensation.
  • Finishing 15th overall and scoring a hole-in-one in the final round, Block concluded his incredible week on a high note.
  • Despite his newfound fame, Block expressed his preference for spending quality time with his family instead of pursuing a career on the PGA Tour.

Michael Block experienced a dream-like week that most golfers aspire to. However, unlike many others, he has no desire to make it a regular occurrence.

Block, a local PGA professional, gained a cult following at the PGA Championship this year when he competed head-to-head with some of the world’s best golfers, many of whom were considerably younger.

Despite his sudden fame and undeniable talent, Block has no plans to pursue a full-time touring career. He values his family and prioritizes spending time with them over chasing PGA Tour success.

“No, I don’t want to play any tours,” the 46-year-old told Golf.com after his appearance at the PGA Championship. “I just want to come out and compete when I’m around and then go back to my club and hang out with my family.”

Block’s stance is not that he doesn’t play professional golf; he simply wants to do it on his own terms.

This marked Block’s fifth appearance in the PGA Championship and his 25th PGA Tour event. He has also participated in two US Opens.

Alan Bastable of Golf.com beautifully describes Block as follows: “It might surprise you — or even mildly irk you — to hear that a player of Block’s talent wouldn’t want to push his competitive limits and see how far his ability can take him. But to have that opinion is to not understand Block’s DNA. He’s not just a player. He’s a teacher, a mentor, a husband, a father of two teenage sons, a dog-lover, a talker, a schmoozer.”

Block finished his incredible week at the PGA Championship tied for 15th place, and he even scored a hole-in-one while playing alongside Rory McIlroy.

His top-15 finish secured him a spot in next year’s PGA Championship, and he was invited to play at the Colonial National Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas, the following week.

When asked if he would raise his teaching rate of $150 per hour, Block responded that he was content with his current financial standing, including his $290,000 paycheck from the championship, and only provided lessons to friends and people he genuinely wanted to be around.

This philosophy aligns with that of another esteemed sports figure later in his career.

In 2018, former Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer shared how NFL legend Bill Belichick selected players. Belichick explained that at his stage in life, he only wanted to coach individuals he genuinely enjoyed being around, according to Meyer.

After Block’s final round, CBS showed him a video of people back at his home course celebrating his hole-in-one.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Block broke down in tears when he realized his son had recorded the video. He expressed that his life was already perfect the way it was.

“I’m livin’ a dream,” he said. “I’m making sure that I enjoy this moment. After 46 years of life, I’ve come to realize that it won’t get any better than this. No way. No chance in hell. So I’m going to cherish this. And thank you.”
