Family Dollar was the first location the Dollar General shooter visited before being stopped.

The suspect in the Jacksonville shooting had previously worked at a dollar store, but his decision to target a different dollar store was seemingly influenced by the presence of a security guard. According to Jacksonville Sheriff TK Waters, the suspect had worked at a Dollar Tree from October 2021 to July 2022. On the day of the shooting, he stopped at a Family Dollar store but left when he saw security approaching. The Dollar Tree and Family Dollar chains share the same owner, while Dollar General is a separate company.

According to Sheriff Waters, the suspect’s actions suggest that he had planned to target Dollar General all along. The exact reason for choosing that particular store, however, remains unclear. In a recently released 911 call, the suspect’s father mentioned that his son had stopped taking psychiatric medication, dropped out of college, and isolated himself in his room after losing his job. Previous records also indicate that the 21-year-old had encountered law enforcement as a teenager, including a incident involving a suicide threat that resulted in involuntary psychiatric evaluation. The suspect’s father discovered a journal in his room which Sheriff Waters described as “the diary of a madman” and revealed the suspect’s hatred towards Black people.

Surveillance footage from the Family Dollar showed the suspect entering and leaving the store with a small shopping bag. However, after he got to his car, a security guard arrived in the parking lot, causing the suspect to flee. Sheriff Waters believes that the guard’s presence deterred the suspect. It appears that the suspect had initially planned to take action at the Family Dollar but grew impatient and decided to target the Dollar General instead. In the predominantly Black New Town neighborhood, the suspect killed three people – Angela Michelle Carr, a 52-year-old Uber driver who was shot in her car; A.J. Laguerre, a 19-year-old store employee who was shot while trying to escape; and Jerrald Gallion, a 29-year-old customer who was shot upon entering the store. The suspect then took his own life.
