Fairs Linked to First Human Swine Flu Cases of the Year

Two cases of swine flu in humans have been linked to county fairs in Michigan this year. The first case involved a child who developed the illness within 10 days of being exposed to pigs at the Oakland County Fair. The child, who was part of the fair as an exhibitor, received antiviral drugs and recovered without hospitalization, according to the Detroit Free Press. The pigs in the fair’s swine barn showed symptoms of the virus a week after the fair opened, and the barn was closed to the public. Testing confirmed that the pigs had influenza. In the second case, a person who attended the Tuscola County Fair developed symptoms but did not require hospitalization and is now recovering. According to CNN, most cases of swine flu are linked to pig exhibits at fairs, although one strain caused a pandemic in 2009.

Both cases of swine flu in Michigan were not transmitted between humans. Different strains of the virus were involved in each case: A(H3)v in the first case and A H1N1v in the second. Swine flu strains differ from human strains, but pigs can transmit the virus to people through coughing or sneezing. The virus is transmitted when respiratory droplets enter the nose or mouth. To prevent transmission, the CDC advises avoiding eating or drinking when in contact with pigs, avoiding sick pigs, and practicing hand hygiene before and after contact with pigs. It’s important to note that swine flu cannot be contracted through the proper handling or consumption of properly cooked pork products. (Read more swine flu stories.)
