Failure to Display THIS Item on Cars Could Result in British Tourists Driving Through France This Summer Being Fined Up to £154

British Tourists Facing Fines in France for Failure to Display Required Vehicle Sticker

  • £4 labels indicating vehicle pollutants must be ordered online
  • Bordeaux and 13 other areas now require drivers to display the sticker

Holidaymakers driving in certain parts of France have been warned that failure to purchase a windscreen emissions sticker could result in fines.

These stickers, priced at £4 each, indicate a vehicle’s pollution level and must be obtained from the French government’s website.

In addition to Bordeaux, the sticker is now required in 14 areas, including Clermont-Ferrand.

Motorists who fail to comply with this rule could face a fine of £58, which increases to £154 if not paid within 45 days. From next year, fines of up to £640 will be implemented, as camera-based enforcement becomes operational.

There are six sticker categories, indicating air pollutant emissions. Zero-emission vehicles require a green ‘0’ tag, while highly polluting diesel vehicles need a ‘5’.

Certain areas in France have restrictions on vehicle access based on the sticker category. For instance, Paris only allows access to marked cars with tags ‘0’, ‘1’, or ‘2’ within specific timeframes.

The RAC has informed travelers that Spain and Switzerland also have emissions regulations in place.

None of these stickers are valid throughout Europe, so British tourists embarking on road trips must familiarize themselves with the rules of each country they pass through.

Rod Dennis, spokesman for the RAC, added, “Within a few years, only zero-emission vehicles will be permitted in certain city centers.”

The other 11 affected regions are Aix-Marseille-Provence, Grenoble, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nice, Reims, Rouen, Strasbourg, and Toulouse.
