FAA Mandates Numerous Changes Prior to Upcoming SpaceX Starship Launch

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a series of directives to SpaceX following the destruction of its launch pad and significant damage caused during its last rocket launch. This move comes as the FAA demands changes to the company’s infrastructure and operational processes before granting permission for another launch.

The FAA has outlined 63 specific steps that SpaceX must complete before it can resume rocket launches from its facility near Brownsville, Texas (source).

Aiming for the successful launch of the Starship, SpaceX’s super-heavy launch vehicle and the most powerful rocket ever built, the previous attempt resulted in disaster. The engines caused the complete destruction of the launch pad, with chunks of concrete and metal debris being propelled hundreds of feet into the air. The Starship itself managed to lift off but was detonated during flight after losing control.

Following this failure, SpaceX faced heavy criticism and allegations of cutting corners due to the lack of flame diverters in the launch pad design. Flame diverters are essential cavities that allow propulsion gases to escape without causing damage to the pad itself.

Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, publicly opposed the use of flame diverters. Unfortunately, the company’s alternative solution was not ready in time for the Starship launch, resulting in the destruction of the concrete pad.

Regarding the incident, SpaceX provided a statement to The Associated Press, stating that they have learned from the failed launch and have taken many valuable lessons from it.

SpaceX is now awaiting FAA approval to utilize the launch pad for a second Starship launch.

With ambitions to transport both people and cargo to and from the International Space Station, SpaceX sees the Starship craft as a crucial component. Furthermore, Musk has contemplated using these crafts for sub-orbital space transportation.
